The Cry it Out Method

The Cry it Out Method

I’ve never been a big fan of the cry it out method. There’s just something about listening to babies cry for a long period of time that makes me upset too. Today, at Kayleigh’s 6th month check up, the doctor told me that she should not be waking up at night and it’s time to get rid of her sleep association with feeding before bed. His suggestion was the cry it out method.

Here’s what he suggested:

  1. Put her down in her crib fully awake
  2. Wait 10 minutes
  3. Go back into the room and assure her that you are still there by telling her it’s time to sleep and then leave. DO NOT PICK HER UP
  4. Repeat for 45 minutes

If she continues this for 45 minutes then pick her up and go about your day with no nap. Sure she’ll be a pain, but then she’ll realize she has to go to bed when you tell her to. We figured this meant that we weren’t going to do breastmilk at night either, this way she has a full stomach when we put her to bed.

So here’s my question. Any suggestions for bedtime routines? What do you think about the cry it out method? Any good tips and tricks for both the cry it out method or exclusively pumping?
